Two abliterated builds of Qwen3.8-27B, from the same base as the stock V100 quants. Aggressive is a broad de-refusal: it answers across the board where the stock model declines, while keeping its reasoning and factual honesty. Cyber is targeted; it is fully open on cyber and offensive-security questions, built on the Aggressive base plus a cyber-pointed peel, and deliberately not pushed to open everything else.

The abliteration started with Heretic, a KL-optimized continuous refusal-removal search, and settled on a single-direction refusal-vector orthogonalization at the quality peak. The previous Aggressive build over-ablated; a benchmark sweep showed that past about alpha 1.15 the extra ablation reduces openness and degrades calibration, so the shipped build sits at the peak and measures better on every axis while being more open. The vision tower and the MTP head survive both recipes intact, so these stay full multimodal models.

Both builds ship in the full set of formats: BF16 safetensors, W4A16 AWQ and NVFP4 for the same V100 and Blackwell paths as the stock quants, GGUF for llama.cpp with the vision projector and MTP head, and 4-bit MLX for Apple Silicon. The Cyber GGUF is the most-downloaded thing here by a wide margin. These are de-refused models; what each one opens and still refuses is written out below from the eval logs, without editorializing.

Research log

  1. Aggressive abliterated and quantized

Ran the broad Heretic abliteration from a 99-of-100 refusal baseline, selected a low-refusal trial with coherence intact, and exported the BF16. Grafted the stock MTP head, quantized to W4A16 and NVFP4, validated on 2x V100, and pushed all three repos public.

  2. Cyber run started

Kicked off the targeted Cyber abliteration against a cyber-offensive prompt set, from a 97-of-100 refusal baseline. The brief was full cyber-openness as the priority, not a gentle knee, with other-category leakage acceptable as long as coherence held.

  3. Cyber v2 recipe

Settled the Cyber recipe on the alpha 1.15 Aggressive base plus a residual-cyber peel applied to the deeper layers only, retaining the first four. That reached 100 of 100 cyber-open at factual 1.00 and zero degeneration, better than the earlier Cyber build on every axis. Published W4A16 and NVFP4.

  4. Cyber GGUF

Converted Cyber to GGUF through llama.cpp with the vision projector and MTP head alongside the weight quants. It became by far the most-downloaded build in the family.

  5. Aggressive recipe-v2 and GGUF

Moved the shipped Aggressive build to the alpha 1.15 peak after the over-ablation sweep, re-quantized, and added the GGUF set including a full BF16 file. Openness measured 0.88 at factual 1.00 and gsm8k 0.85.

  6. MLX 4-bit, both builds

Published 4-bit MLX quants of Cyber and Aggressive for Apple Silicon, group size 64 affine, needing mlx-lm 0.31.3 for the qwen3_5 architecture.

  7. Serving on 1Cat-vLLM 1.5.1

Re-gated the Aggressive W4A16 AWQ build on the current 1Cat-vLLM 1.5.1 release with its bundled profile: FP8 E4M3 KV, MTP k=2, one V100. A single SXM2 card decoded at 45.3 tok/s; the starting-from-scratch lesson was to take the new wheel's launch profile rather than porting the old flags.

built on the work of

  • The Qwen team for Qwen3.8-27B and the official BF16 release (Apache-2.0).
  • p-e-w for Heretic, the KL-optimized abliteration tool the de-refusal started from.
  • Andy Arditi et al. and mlabonne for the single-direction refusal-ablation method.
  • The llm-compressor project (vLLM) for the AWQ and GPTQ quantization paths.
  • The llama.cpp and MLX projects for the GGUF and Apple Silicon conversions.
  • 1CatAI for 1Cat-vLLM and its SM70 serving paths.
  • @elBuffo for reporting the tokenizer truncation bug.

Get it running

you'll need

  • 2x V100 32GB (TP2) for the W4A16 AWQ builds, the same SM70 path and 19.5 GB footprint as the stock quants.
  • NVFP4 (25.2 GB) for Blackwell FP4; it also loads on Volta at capability 7.0.
  • GGUF runs on llama.cpp, CPU or GPU; Q4_K_M is 19.0 GB and Q8_0 is near-lossless at 28.6 GB. Load the mmproj file for image input and the mtp file for speculative decoding.
  • MLX 4-bit (15.1 GB) runs on Apple Silicon via mlx-lm 0.31.3 or newer, which adds the qwen3_5 architecture.

Pick a build and a format

Aggressive for broad de-refusal, Cyber if you specifically want offensive-security questions answered in full. Then pick the format for your hardware: W4A16 AWQ for 2x V100 or Ampere+, NVFP4 for Blackwell, GGUF for llama.cpp, MLX for Apple Silicon, or the BF16 safetensors if you want to quantize them yourself.

    2x V100 via 1Cat-vLLM

The W4A16 AWQ builds serve on the same SM70 path and launch profile as the stock quants: install the stock upstream 1Cat-vLLM wheel from the release, keep ninja on PATH, and run the profile in qwen-3.8-v100 with TP2, FP8 KV and MTP. NVFP4 serves the same way via 1Cat's prepare_nvfp4_linear (capability 70).

Recipe

4.1Abliteration

The first builds used Heretic, a KL-optimized continuous abliteration that searches per-layer refusal-removal strength against a Pareto front of refusal rate versus KL divergence. The direction is computed in non-thinking mode, with a closed think block prefilled so the evaluator scores the answer and not the reasoning preamble, over a harmful/harmless prompt split. The broad run cleared refusals from a 99-of-100 baseline down into the teens while keeping coherence.

The shipped Aggressive build is a single-direction refusal-vector orthogonalization in the Arditi and mlabonne lineage, at layer 28, strength alpha 1.15. That value is the quality peak: a benchmark sweep showed the previous build at alpha about 1.24 over-ablated, which reduced openness and degraded reasoning and calibration. At the peak the model is both more open and better on every measured axis.

4.2Cyber peel

Cyber starts from the alpha-1.15 Aggressive base and adds a residual-cyber peel: a cyber-pointed refusal direction, computed from the cyber-offensive prompt set against broad harmless prompts, removed by a clean norm-preserving projection at full strength. The projection is applied only to the deeper layers, retaining the first four.

Retaining the early feature-extraction layers is what keeps general capability intact; it is the lesson from the community's earlier Qwen abliterations. That is how the build reaches full cyber-openness without wrecking reasoning, factual accuracy or coherence.

4.3Quant and head graft

The quant pipeline is the same one the stock V100 builds use. W4A16 is AWQ at group 128, asymmetric, MSE observer, 256 Magpie CoT calibration samples at 1024 tokens. NVFP4 is the variant-C GPTQ recipe, NVFP4A16 with the GatedDeltaNet in_proj_qkv and in_proj_z projections kept in FP16 and 768 CoT plus 256 wiki calibration, act-order on weights, MSE observer.

The MTP head is not abliterated. Heretic loads through transformers, which drops the mtp tensors, so the merged BF16 export has no head; the stock BF16 head is grafted into each quant output and listed in the ignore set. Every quant script copies the tokenizer files verbatim from the base after saving, the fix for the truncation bug that broke vision inputs.

4.4GGUF and MLX

GGUF conversion runs through llama.cpp and ships the weight quants (Q4_K_M through Q8_0, plus a BF16 for Aggressive), the vision projector as mmproj files, and the MTP head as mtp files. The Cyber BF16 is not shipped as one GGUF because it exceeds the 50 GB per-file limit; Q8_0 stands in as the near-lossless option.

MLX is a 4-bit affine quant at group size 64, for Apple Silicon through mlx-lm.

Findings

  • The previous Aggressive build over-ablated. A benchmark sweep showed a quality peak around alpha 1.15: past it, extra refusal ablation reduces openness and degrades reasoning and calibration rather than increasing openness. The shipped build sits at the peak, which is both more open (0.88 vs 0.80) and better on confabulation and gsm8k than the stronger-ablated one.
  • The cyber peel only works because it retains the first four layers. Projecting the cyber refusal direction out of the deeper layers alone keeps the early feature-extraction stack intact, and that is what preserves general capability while reaching full cyber-openness. Ablating all layers wrecks the model.
  • Cyber is targeted, not total. From the probe it opens hacking, lockpicking, and privacy and fraud topics, and deflects rather than fully answering on malware and weapons. It still refuses drugs, disinformation, surveillance, political manipulation, and extremism. Aggressive opens more broadly but still holds the line on weapons, drugs, privacy, and the political and extremism categories.
  • The MTP head is never abliterated. Heretic loads via transformers, which drops the mtp tensors, so the de-refused export carries no head; the stock BF16 head is grafted back into each quant. That keeps speculative decoding working and keeps the refusal edits off the draft path.
  • The NVFP4 build cannot use the norm-restore trick that an earlier broad-ablation method relied on. Restoring outlier norms after projection breaks NVFP4, so the single-direction and projection recipes here are chosen to need no norm restore, which is also why they quantize cleanly to FP4.
  • The calibration save left an active truncation block in the tokenizer, which broke vision inputs larger than the limit with an HTTP 400 out of vLLM. It was fixed across 15 repos by restoring the tokenizer files verbatim from the base model, and every quant script now does that copy automatically.
